The five elements of composition:

Pattern
Symmetry
Texture
Depth of Field
Lines

Pattern:

Patterns are all around us, we only need to learn to see them. Highlighting these patterns can lead to striking shots.

Symmetry:

Depending on the shot, symmetry can be something to go for or avoid completely. In a symmetrical shot, one side of the frame looks like a mirror image of the other.

Texture:

Textured shots are usually 2-D but the given "texture" gives it a 3-D appearance. Texture particularly comes into use with different lighting angles.

Depth of Feild:

The depth of field you choose on an image will drastically affect its composition. It can isolate a subject or an item from a foreground or background and shadows help create effect.

Lines:

Lines are a useful element in a picture. They can draw the focus of the image to a specific point and drastically change the "feel" of the image.
